As some of you know I've been debating between a half dozen cars and (I think) I've narrowed it down to the BMW Z4 M Coupe and the Cayman S. There isn't an M Coupe near me so I thought I'd try a 2008 Z4 M Roadster in black on black with every option that was close enough and caught my eye.
I have had a 1998 M Roadster and was anxious to compare the 1st gen with the 2nd gen. Wow what a difference. The Z4 M was better in every single every way. Rode better, handled better, sounded better, better power delivery, better looking, you name it.
Impressive car, but I don't think it is the one for me. One thing that stayed the same between the 1st gen and 2nd gen is how tight the cabin is. If this was a 2nd car and not my DD, I would not only not mind it, I would love it. But after having been down this road before I know the feeling of climbing into a tight cabin when you're hot and sweaty in mid-July and feeling "squeezed".
I've decided to go the route of getting one nicer car rather than a DD and a weekend car and because of that I need a car with at least a modicum of practicality and the Z4M just doesn't have it. No storage in the cabin, no storage in the trunk/hatch, plus the tight cabin just squashes it for me unfortunately. So on to the Cayman S.
But hey, it was a great drive!

Yeah, get the Cayman. It has two trunks!

more than the lack of storage and general cabin space is the inability to recline the seats completely.
Too many M's

If you widen your search area a Z4M coupe would be a whole lotta space. The Roadster is definitely not the practical alternative.
But if you're able to a 987.2 Cayman S is a nicer basket to put your apples in.
